Research on the Model of Endometriosis

I. Introduction to the model

When endometrial tissue (glands and mesenchyme) appears in a site other than the body of the uterus, it is called endometriosis (EMT), or simply endometriosis. Ectopic endometrial tissue is commonly found in the ovaries and ligaments that support the uterus, and occasionally in the fallopian tubes. The cause of endometriosis is unknown, there is no known method of prevention, and there is currently no cure, but the symptoms can be treated with medication or (in some cases) with surgery. It causes a chronic inflammatory response that may lead to the formation of scar tissue (adhesions, fibrosis) within the pelvis and elsewhere in the body. The types of endometriosis are as follows: superficial endometriosis occurs mainly in the pelvic peritoneum; ovarian endometriosis cysts (endometriomas) occur in the ovaries; deep endometriosis occurs in the rectovaginal septum, bladder, and intestines; and, in rare cases, endometriosis occurs outside the pelvis as well.
